Spotify Direct Messages Are Live & Here’s How They Work
Spotify isn’t just your go-to music and podcast app anymore. It’s leaning into the social side of things with the latest move being direct messages. You can now slide into someone’s Spotify DMs and share your favorite tracks, podcasts, or audiobooks without jumping over to WhatsApp or Instagram.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how it all works.
DMs Make It To Spotify
Spotify says users have been asking for this feature for a while. Whether that’s true or just one of those influencer lines like “since many of you asked…”, one thing’s clear: people love sharing DMs. Just look at Threads, for example — even though it started as a micro-blogging platform, it eventually added direct messaging.
Until now, if you wanted to share a track from Spotify, you had to copy the link and send it through another app like Instagram or WhatsApp. Now you can skip that extra step and chat right inside the app.
Here’s what you can do with Spotify DMs:
- Chat one-on-one with friends
- Send text messages
- React with emojis
- Share any track, album, playlist, podcast, or audiobook
How to Send a DM on Spotify
- While listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook, open the Now Playing View.
- Tap the share icon, select a friend, and send your message.
- Once your friend accepts the message request, you can start chatting back and forth.
Where to Find the Messages
Access all your DMs by tapping your profile picture in the top-left corner of the app.
Like other apps, Spotify lets you accept or decline message requests. And if you ever get something you don’t want, you can block or report the sender.
Who Can I Send a Spotify DM to?
You can start chats with people you’ve previously shared content with, and Spotify will also suggest contacts based on shared playlists, Jams, Blends, or if you’re on a Family or Duo plan together.
Your integrations with social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram stay the same — Spotify’s DMs are meant to complement them, not replace them.
How Safe Are My Messages?
Spotify ensures your direct message is encrypted and secure:
“To help ensure a secure sharing experience, conversations are protected with industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest.”
Who & In Which Countries are DMs Available?
Can’t message just yet? Be patient… Spotify says Messages will start rolling out this week to both Free and Premium users aged 16+ “in select countries and on select mobile devices.”
So, no official word yet on exactly where you can send a Spotify direct message, but rest assured, you’ll soon be able to DM that track you want your friends to hear.
