TikTok Community Guidelines Get Clearer and Safer

20 August 2025

Let’s face it: nobody loves reading guidelines. But if we want a respectful online community that is free of anxiety-inducing content, we need TikTok’s Community Guidelines.

The problem? They’re usually too long. Plus, they’re often written like you accidentally stumbled into law school.

But TikTok just did something refreshing. They’ve revamped their Community Guidelines. The new version is clearer, easier to follow, and actually feels like it was written for humans.

So, what’s new? Let’s break it down.

Plain Language

TikTok has updated its Community Guidelines to make them easier for everyone to understand. How?

👉 Simple, clear rules
👉 Easy-to-understand definitions
👉 Consistent enforcement

The guidelines now use straightforward language about what you can and can’t post.

There’s even a rules-at-a-glance section — basically a cheat sheet with the most important policies. Perfect for when you want the essentials without scrolling through pages of fine print.

Stronger Safety Features

TikTok isn’t just updating words on a page. They’re backing it up with new tools.

They’ve rolled out safety features for teens, families, and creators, such as:

  • Creator Care Mode: It filters out unwanted or offensive comments, tailoring what you see based on your own moderation choices.
  • A new mute feature for TikTok LIVE: It helps creators on LIVE to bulk mute words, phrases and emojis.
  • Content Check Lite: It allows creators to pre-check whether their content is likely to be ineligible for the For You Page (FYP) before they post it. It’s been rolled out through TikTok Studio
  • Creator Inbox: A new professional inbox experience designed to help creators manage their messages more efficiently.
  • Creator Chat Room, which allows creators to connect and interact directly with eligible followers on TikTok.

You have more control over who can reach you, how you interact, and what your experience looks like on the platform.

And yes, this also means stricter policies for things that can cause harm.

What’s Actually Changing in the Rules?

Besides making them easier to read, TikTok has also refined the content standards:

  • 🚫 Misinformation: tighter rules to keep fake news and AI-generated content in check
  • 🚫 Bullying: clarified policies so there’s less wiggle room
  • 🚫 Regulated goods: alcohol, tobacco, drugs, weapons, gambling… all bundled under one unified policy

TikTok’s aim with this is to have less grey areas and more clarity.

More Transparency Around Enforcement

Here’s where it gets interesting: TikTok is opening the curtains on how they enforce rules.

  • They now explain how they respond to emerging harms during crises (think health emergencies or breaking news).
  • They show how policies can vary by region, respecting local cultures and laws.
  • And they’ve made it easier to understand what happens to your account if something gets flagged.

That ‘why did my video get taken down?’ mystery? It’s a little less mysterious now.

Humans + AI = Faster Moderation

You know how fast TikTok moves — a video can go viral in hours. That’s why TikTok leans on AI and moderation tech to catch rule-breaking content. TikTok stated in its press release:

  • Over 85% of violating content is detected and removed by automation.
  • 99% of it is gone before anyone even reports it.

And if your content was removed by mistake, appeals are still possible (and according to Tiktok, appeal rates haven’t spiked despite more automation, which shows the system is holding up).

💡 Have you heard of Footnotes on TikTok? It’s another new moderation layer TikTok has launched in the US:

TikTok’s new Community Guidelines are a bit clearer, fairer, and more transparent with better safety features to back them up. When will they take effect? On September 13, 2025.
