What is YouTube Hype?

YouTube Hype is a relatively new fan-powered visibility tool for smaller creators. It gives viewers a direct way to support emerging creators. By hyping up their videos, creators can reach new audiences and gain extra traction.

Here’s how it works:

  • Creators in the YouTube Partner Program with fewer than 500,000 subscribers get a Hype button on their videos uploaded in the last 7 days
  • Fans click the Hype button (right under “Like”) if they love the video and want to support its creator.
  • Each viewer can hype up to three videos per week.
  • Each hype generates points, boosting a video up a country-specific leaderboard in the Explore menu.

The Small Creator Bonus

Smaller creators get an extra advantage. YouTube applies a multiplier to hypes on channels with fewer subscribers, meaning, the fewer subscriptions you have, the bigger the impact of each hype.

👉 In other words: less audience → more boost.

Why It Matters For Smaller Accounts

If you’re full of motivation but struggling to grow your channel, YouTube Hype is worth keeping an eye on, especially with the extra boost YouTube is giving smaller accounts.

Making it onto the weekly leaderboard of the top 100 hyped videos gives you a real shot at being discovered by new viewers curious about your niche.

Here’s what comes with it:

  • Special badge for top hyped videos
  • A “Hyped” filter on the home feed
  • Notifications when your video climbs
  • “Hype star” badges for your most supportive fans

The idea behind Hype is simple: most viewers genuinely want to help small creators grow.

According to YouTube, in a survey of 2,500 viewers (ages 18–45) across the US, Japan, and Germany, over 75% of respondents — and over 80% of Gen Z — said they’d like to support small and medium-sized creators.

How to Turn On YouTube Hype?

Good news: You don’t have to do anything. Hype is turned on by default. If you don’t want it, you can opt out in Studio Desktop → Advanced Settings.

Tracking & Creator Tools

YouTube Studio mobile app now comes with dedicated Hype analytics where you can track how your Hypes are doing:

  • A new Hype Card in analytics
  • Weekly recaps showing your hype performance

These tools help you understand what’s working and how to build on your momentum.

What is a Category Leaderboard? (Coming soon)

YouTube isn’t stopping at all-in-one leaderboards. Soon, fans will be able to discover hyped videos by topic: gaming, music, beauty — you name it.

That means:

  • Easier discovery for niche creators
  • Fans can share posts spotlighting videos they hyped directly to their community
  • Established creators can help emerging ones by passing the spotlight
