Too Much AI on Pinterest? Here’s the Fix [New AI Labels]

26 May 2025

Does Pinterest have an AI problem? Maybe you’ve noticed your feed being flooded with “perfect” images lately. Well, that’s due to a wave of AI-generated content. But don’t worry – Pinterest is bringing more transparency to AI, and as a social media manager, this is something you definitely need to keep an eye on.

Pinterest Labels AI-Generated Content

To address growing criticism of AI images, Pinterest is now introducing more transparency: Images created or edited using generative AI are now labeled directly on the platform.

After months of testing, the new “Gen AI” labels are now live globally. At the same time, Pinterest is rolling out new features that let users control how much AI-generated content they want to see.

As people encounter AI-generated content on Pinterest, we are empowering our users to make more informed choices about the content they see. Gen AI content on Pinterest should enhance users’ ability to discover and act on their inspiration, and we are intentionally approaching this new landscape in a thoughtful way that benefits everyone on Pinterest, says Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer.

Here’s How Pinterest Is Responding to the AI Wave

The platform has rolled out several new features to keep AI-generated content in check:

  • AI Label on Image Pins: When you click on an image, you’ll now see a “AI-modified” label at the bottom left.
  • Automatic Detection: Pinterest uses metadata and its own classifiers to detect AI content – even without obvious signs.
  • Dispute Option: Tech isn’t perfect. If your content is mistakenly labeled as AI-generated, you can submit an appeal.

Want to See Fewer AI Pins? Here’s How:

Pinterest now gives you more control over what appears in your feed, especially when it comes to AI-generated content.

Good to know: You can adjust your preferences to see fewer AI pins. This currently applies to categories like:
👉 Art
👉 Entertainment
👉 Beauty
👉 Architecture
👉 Home ideas
👉 Fashion
👉 Sports
👉 Health
More categories are in the works.

How to adjust your feed:

  1. Open a Pin in your feed.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the bottom right.
  3. If it’s an AI-generated Pin, you’ll see the option: “Show fewer AI Pins.”

Pinterest will remember your choice and show you fewer AI Pins over time.

❗Can’t find this option on your AI-labeled pins yet? You’re not alone. Although Pinterest announced the feature is already available, many users report it’s not visible to them. It might just be a matter of time or a phased rollout – but hang in there. Pinterest is aware of the AI-related issue and is actively working on a fix.

How Is AI Used on Pinterest?

Let’s quickly break down how the platform uses AI and how you can (if you want) take control of it:

  • Pinterest Canvas: Pinterest’s own text-to-image AI model enhances real product images with realistic backgrounds, e.g. in ads. It’s not full image generation, but more of a visual upgrade.
  • Personalized Recommendations: Pinterest’s AI analyzes your activity to show you relevant Pins and ads in your feed, search results, and related Pins.
  • Content Moderation: AI helps review content to ensure it follows Pinterest’s community guidelines.
  • User Control Over AI Content: You can choose to see fewer AI-generated Pins in certain categories like beauty or art.
  • Feedback Options: Users and creators can report when they believe their content has been incorrectly flagged as AI-generated.

AI Training with Your Data? No, Thanks!

To make its AI more personalized, the platform uses your data to train its AI models. The good news: you can opt out. Here’s how:

  1. Tap the profile icon (bottom right corner).
  2. Tap your profile picture (top left).
  3. Go to “Privacy and Data” in the menu.
  4. Scroll down to the “Gen AI” section.
  5. Look for the option “Use your data to train Pinterest Canvas.”
  6. Toggle the switch to off. And that’s it!
