What is the Fediverse?
What in the world is the fediverse and why have you been seeing this term? Well, to break it down the word is a combination of federation and universe and the definition is exactly that.
The fediverse is a decentralized social network separate from all the other networks while also binding them all together including all of Meta. Facebook, Instagram, and now threads are all a part of the fediverse.
After the launch of Threads, the new Meta app, all three of the social networks that belong to Meta are now also belonged to the fediverse.
What Does the Fediverse Mean?
Since July 5, Threads has 26.3 Million users. If you are one of these users and read the terms and conditions of this application, you read the word Fediverse. The terms read:
“Future versions of Threads will work with the fediverse, a new type of social media network that allows people to follow and interact with each other on different platforms, such as Mastodon.”
Mastodon is written as free and open-source software for federated microblogging, which anybody can contribute to, and can run on their own server. So when you download Threads you will be able to follow, be followed, and communicate with other users on other servers as if it was on the same platform.
What Does it Mean for Everyday Users?
Although it may be time-consuming, when downloading new apps it is important to read those terms and conditions. But when it comes to downloading Threads and what it means to become a user of the fediverse in the future, should we worry? We think no, at least not for now. This is not happening now but it will affect us users and how we will interact on social media in the future.
