What are Community Notes on Twitter?

02 March 2023

Twitter is cultivating a new collaborative community on the app and opening up conversations. For those tweets that you feel need further explanation or clarification, the Community Notes feature is allowing others to chime in.

Twitter Community Notes

With the volume of tweets sent out every day, you sometimes miss the context of tweets or clarification. This comes in handy when you have missed something and don’t have the time to scroll through thread after thread.

This can also help avoid misunderstandings, clarify information on the app, and establish relationships on the social network. Thanks to Community Notes, now there’s can’t be plenty of false information being spread.

Well, that’s what Community Notes are in a nutshell: Notes that are added to tweets and serve to give context to published content.

How Community Notes work

Community Notes are based on a program called Birdwatch, so in order to access this feature you first must join, which you can do so through this link

First what happens is a user posts a tweet that is suspected of sharing false information. At that time, other users, called “Collaborators” can add a note to the tweet to clarify the information of it.

Then, another group of collaborators decides if this note is correct and clarifies the falsehood of the original tweet. The decision depends on how many collaborators approve and/or deny it.

Twitter clarifies that it does not represent the opinion of the point of view of users and that it will not intervene in the notes unless any party violates the rules.

How to join Community Notes

If you want to join Community Notes as a collaborator and use this feature to make Twitter a better place, you can enter this link: Twitter Community Notes

Keep in mind that contributors are normal users and not affiliated with Twitter Blue subscriptions, influencers, or content creators.

Thus, Twitter states that if an account meets the participation requirements, they have the option to register as a collaborator.

Each collaborator starts with the ability to rate a note, then they may have the ability to write one of their own.

In order to register, you must follow these steps outlined by the app:

  • Step 1: Comply with the rules of Twitter and have a phone associated with the account, one that is not associated with another.
  • Step 2: Accept the values of the community that are to contribute understanding, act in good faith, and be of help.
  • Step 3: Accept that all contributors are public and can be viewed by any user.

How to rate a note on Twitter

Once you’ve joined the Twitter community, now you can actually rate the notes.

  • Head to Twitter Notes.
  • Here you will see all the tweets that contributors have added a note to.
  • Now your job is to rate it as honestly as possible, by clicking on “Rate it.”
  • When you click on that button, it will open a window with the current rating of the note and three options: yes it is useful, somewhat useful or it isn’t.

Additional review of the note

There of course brings up the question, what if a user adds a false note to a tweet, just to defame the original creator?

In this case, Twitter gives the creator access to a link, to review the note that they have left and that can damage their credibility.

This new assessment is made up of a group of collaborators, which doesn’t automatically mean the rating of the tweet will change. In the event that it does and the note becomes no longer useful, it will be removed.

If you are the author of the tweet and want to review a note, visit this page and follow these steps:

  • Copy the link to your tweet.
  • Paste the link into the form.
  • Click on the button to go to Community Notes.
  • Click Request Additional Review.

Conclusion

Are these Twitter Community Notes useful?

From our point of view and what we have noticed on notes, most are topics of political issues. Although it is possible that this feature ends up reaching all kinds of content.

Among others, the ones that may really interest us are marketing, social media, etc.

However, it’s our job to be up-to-date with the news and updates on Twitter. What do you think? Do you find this feature useful?
