YouTube Shorts Update: Hearts, 2x Playback Speed, and a Cleaner Viewer Experience

Emerson Tyler Emerson Tyler 06 July 2026

YouTube is making Shorts feel faster, cleaner, and more intuitive. The latest YouTube Shorts update introduces three new features designed to improve how users interact with short-form videos.

While the following updates don’t directly impact the YouTube Shorts algorithm, they reflect YouTube’s ongoing effort to refine Shorts and compete more aggressively in the short-form video space. Here’s what each update means for creators and viewers.

2x Playback Speed Makes Shorts Even Faster

One of the biggest additions in this YouTube Shorts update is 2x playback speed. This feature gives viewers the ability to watch Shorts at twice the normal speed. For viewers, this means they can consume more content in less time, whether they’re scrolling through entertainment, catching up on current events, or flying through tutorials.

For creators, however, this raises the importance of strong pacing. The first few seconds of a Short have always been critical, but now content also needs to remain engaging and easy to follow even when played at twice the speed. Clear visuals, concise messaging, and quick cuts will become even more valuable as audiences choose how quickly they consume content.

Hearts Replace Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down

Another significant change is the replacement of the traditional thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons with a single heart button. While this doesn’t change how likes are counted, it simplifies the engagement experience and creates a more familiar interface for users who regularly use other short-form video platforms.

For creators, the change is largely cosmetic, but it reinforces YouTube’s emphasis on positive engagement. While viewers no longer have the option to thumbs-down a post, they can still flag a video as “Not interested” or hide videos from a certain channel. This can be done by clicking the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the platform.

Clear Screen Mode Creates a More Immersive Experience

The latest YouTube Shorts update also introduces Clear Screen mode. This mode allows viewers to hide interface elements like buttons, captions, and overlays while watching a YouTube Short. This creates a cleaner, more immersive viewing experience that lets the video itself take center stage.

For creators, this makes visual storytelling even more crucial. Since viewers can remove on-screen distractions, high-quality editing, visual effects, and strong composition become even more impactful. No matter the content type, creators now have the opportunity to let their content shine without interface clutter.

How These Updates Bring YouTube Shorts Closer to TikTok

Taken together, these changes make YouTube Shorts feel more like the TikTok platform. The new heart icon and 2x playback speed mirror features that users on TikTok have come to expect. By implementing these familiar tools, YouTube is creating a faster, more intuitive viewing experience.

This update is a testament to YouTube’s continued investment in quality short-form content. For creators, it’s another reminder to produce content that’s engaging, visually compelling, and easy to consume in today’s fast-scrolling landscape.
