Meta’s Forum: What It Is and How the New Reddit-Like App Works

Meta quietly launched Forum, a new standalone app to bring the Facebook Groups experience to a space more focused on conversations and communities.

Forum is not a brand new social platform. Instead, it connects directly to your Facebook account: it imports your groups, your profile, and your existing activity. What you post on Forum will also be visible within your groups on Facebook, so both platforms share the same ecosystem.

Let’s see how it works and why it matters for social media marketers.

What Is Meta’s Forum?

Forum is Meta’s app dedicated exclusively to group conversations. Its goal is to separate that experience from Facebook’s main feed, where Reels, friends’ posts, and ads all compete for your attention.

The concept is similar to that of Reddit, a platform with more than 1.2 billion registered users who participate daily in discussions organized around topic-based communities.

With Forum, Meta is betting on bringing the spotlight back to conversations between users, without ads or recommendations for accounts you don’t follow.

Forum also starts with a significant structural advantage: Facebook Groups already have 1.8 billion users, a figure larger than Reddit’s entire registered user base. That means Forum doesn’t need to build an audience from scratch.

What Facebook’s Forum App Is For

Forum is Meta’s answer to users who miss the conversational element from their social feeds. With this app, Meta aims to give groups more weight as a standalone product, separating the community experience from the noise of the main feed.

At the same time, Forum enters into direct competition with Reddit in the space of discussions and community-driven answers.

One of its standout features is Ask. You type a question, and Forum generates answers based on previous conversations across different groups, without requiring you to scroll through posts one by one. It works similarly to Google’s AI Overviews, which summarize information from multiple sources to provide a direct answer.

Meta’s goal is for Forum to become the go-to place when you have a question, whether it’s answered by AI or by another user.

There’s a deeper strategic angle as well. Reddit’s value has never been just its interface. It’s the vast collection of human expertise organized by topic and refined through its upvote-and-downvote system.

AI chatbots increasingly rely on Reddit’s highest-rated discussions as valuable sources for generating answers. Forum appears to be Meta’s attempt to build a similar repository of high-quality, human-vetted conversations within its own ecosystem, creating data that can continuously improve its AI tools over time.

How Forum Works

To start using Forum, follow these steps:

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Log in with your Facebook account.
  3. Your groups, profile, and activity will connect automatically. You have the option to post under a nickname. Your groups will continue to exist on Facebook, and anything you share on Forum will be visible in your Facebook groups.
  4. You can now post, ask questions, or reply.

Unlike Facebook’s main feed, Forum is built around group conversations rather than personal profile posts. Your feed focuses on what people are discussing, asking, and commenting on across your communities, instead of emphasizing trending content.

If you manage a group, Forum also introduces new features for admins. You’ll continue to have access to Facebook’s existing management tools, while gaining a built-in AI assistant that can help moderate content, manage routine tasks, and keep the community active.

Forum for Social Media Managers

Forum highlights three important signals for social media managers about where platforms are heading:

  • Communities
  • Search based on real conversations
  • AI powered by user-generated content

The fact that Meta is launching an app dedicated entirely to groups sends a clear message: conversations between people are becoming valuable again. Not everything revolves around the short-form video algorithm. Spaces where people ask questions, share recommendations, debate ideas, and exchange experiences are once again becoming a priority.

There’s also an important difference between community discussions and content with a short lifespan. A Reel may stay relevant for only a few hours or days, but a helpful answer within a community can resurface every time someone asks a similar question.

If you already manage a Facebook Group, Forum gives you an opportunity to breathe new life into your community. If you don’t have one yet, this may be the right time to reconsider whether your social media strategy depends too heavily on short-lived content and not enough on the spaces where people actively engage with each other.

How Businesses Can Use Forum

If you run a brand or business, here are a few practical ways to put Forum to use:

  • Build a niche community early: Businesses that establish a presence on a new platform early often become the go-to authority in their space.
  • Offer real customer support: A Forum community allows customers to help one another while your team moderates discussions and provides expert answers, building trust more effectively than a traditional FAQ page or ad campaign.
  • Collect product feedback organically: Forum discussions can reveal what customers are genuinely asking about, where they’re struggling, and what they’d like to see improved.
  • Run expert Q&A sessions: Positioning your team or founders as accessible experts helps build credibility in ways that paid advertising can’t easily match.
  • Create a loyalty-driven space: Your most engaged customers often want to connect with one another. Giving them a dedicated space to do so creates a stronger sense of community.

Forum arrives at a time when communities and meaningful conversations are gaining momentum as social feeds become increasingly dominated by entertainment content. Platforms like Reddit continue to grow because they offer something many feeds don’t: real opinions, shared experiences, and practical answers.
