Instagram’s New AI Label Rule: Comply or Lose Reach

Instagram is giving its AI Creator label a makeover, the company announced yesterday. The label has been renamed “AI-generated profile”, and this time, there’s a little more at stake than just what the badge says.
What’s Changing
The label itself isn’t new. Instagram has been testing a version of it since earlier this year. What’s new is the name, and the consequences that come with it.
Going forward, any profile featuring a person who was generated or substantially created with AI needs to carry the AI-generated profile label.
Already using the old “AI Creator” label? Instagram will automatically rename it and prompt you to confirm that it still applies, or remove it if it doesn’t.
And before you panic about every AI-assisted post you’ve ever made: this isn’t about those.
If you use AI to edit a photo, tidy up a caption, or design a graphic, you’re in the clear. The label is specifically for profiles where the person being presented isn’t real. Your AI-enhanced carousel is safe from this particular label.

Skip The Label, Risk Losing Reach
Profiles featuring an AI-generated person that don’t use the label can now have their reach limited. Instagram says it will detect unlabeled profiles, notify the account, and flag it in Account Status if the profile is no longer eligible to appear in recommendations.
If that happens, there are two ways to get back on track:
- Add the label so the profile accurately reflects that it’s AI-based.
- Appeal the decision if you think Instagram got it wrong.
Creators who label proactively won’t see a drop in reach.
So, if you’re running an AI persona account, now is a good time to check your profile settings. You probably don’t want Instagram’s systems doing the checking for you.
What’s Behind this Change
This update comes at a time when telling a real person from an AI influencer is getting increasingly difficult.
Just look at Facebook’s recent move to introduce a verified badge to make it easier to distinguish real profiles from bots. As AI image generators become more advanced, the question of “is this person real?” is becoming harder to answer at a glance.
The AI-generated profile label is designed to tackle exactly that. And there are obvious signs that audiences are becoming wary of AI-generated content, too.
Metricool’s 2026 State of AI in Social Media Study found that the share of social media professionals who say AI-generated content performs worse than non-AI content has nearly tripled in a year – from 5% to 14%.
That’s a pretty notable shift at a time when AI slop is flooding feeds everywhere. The more AI blends into the feed, the more important transparency becomes.
The timing also comes during a bumpier road for Meta’s AI features, including the backlash and quick rollback of an AI image tool that allowed users to generate images based on public Instagram accounts.
What this Means for Your Strategy
If you manage an AI persona account, an avatar-based brand, or any profile built around a generated “face”, this is worth acting on now rather than waiting for a notification.
Here’s what to do:
- Check whether your profile qualifies for the label and toggle it on if it does.
- Don’t confuse this with AI content labels. Using AI for editing, captions, or graphics doesn’t automatically mean you need an AI-generated profile label.
- Keep an eye on Account Status. If your reach suddenly dips on a profile featuring a generated person, check whether Instagram has flagged the account before blaming the algorithm.
Transparency labels have been creeping across the major platforms, and Instagram just gave this one some actual teeth. If reach-based enforcement works, expect other platforms to follow. Because a badge is one thing, but putting your reach on the line is another.
